About Kaweka Forest Park

Kaweka Forest Park is located in the central North Island of New Zealand and covers a diverse landscape of dense native forests, rolling hills, and high peaks reaching over 1700 meters. Predominantly covered by exotic pine plantations interspersed with pockets of native beech and podocarp trees, the park supports a range of native wildlife including kaka, kereru, and various forest birds. Historically, the area was lightly inhabited by Māori and later developed as a site for timber production before being designated a protected forest park managed by the Department of Conservation alongside the New Zealand Forest Service. The park is renowned for outdoor recreation, notably its extensive trail system accommodating hikers, mountain bikers, and hunters during hunting seasons. The Kaweka Range itself offers challenging alpine climbs, including the summit of Kaweka, which provides expansive views over the Hawke's Bay region and Lake Taupo beyond. Several rivers and streams within the park are popular for trout fishing. Recreational camping and backcountry huts are available, catering to both day visitors and multi-day trekkers. The park’s remote and varied terrain attracts those seeking both adventure and solitude within native forest settings. Its proximity to Napier and the Hawkes Bay region makes it accessible while still offering a wilderness experience distinct from more developed areas. Visitors often combine visits to Kaweka Forest Park with other nearby conservation areas for extended outdoor exploration.
